Why has my black hard rubber pen discoloured?

Black hard rubber and ebonite oxidise with age. A century of UV exposure fades the original colour and lifts a cast to the surface. The oxidation sits on the material itself, which is why generic rubber restorers only improve the surface for a week before the oxidation returns.

Why are oxidised pens cheaper to buy?

Because most buyers mistake surface oxidation for permanent damage. The grey-green bloom hides the colour, the imprint and the tactile quality that drive a pen's appeal, so oxidised examples routinely sell at a discount. In most cases the material underneath is intact.

Does treatment help the pens I already own?

Presentation drives how a pen is seen, and the maker's imprint is the first thing a collector checks. Oxid-X lifts the oxidation rather than masking it, recovers imprint legibility, and returns the deep black of the original material. No treatment can promise a price, but a pen that shows its imprint and its original finish presents as what it is.

How do I restore a maker's imprint?

Stage 1 lifts the oxidation that obscures a worn imprint. As the surface oxidation comes away, lettering that has been unreadable for decades returns to legibility. The lettering was always there. Nothing is re-engraved or infilled.

Is Oxid-X safe for metal fittings?

Yes. The chemistry is specific to the rubber substrate and does not react with metal fittings. The clip, trim, lever box, nib and bands are protected throughout, so there is no risk to the metal on the pen.

Do I need to strip the pen down?

No. There is no need to strip the pen down to its component parts, and no need to remove the lever, the filling mechanism or the finials before treatment. Where a pen is already being opened for a sac replacement, as most lever fillers are, the section separates at the joint and the parts are treated directly.

Is there a British deoxidiser for vintage pens?

Yes. The two established deoxidisers are available only from the United States, which means postage, import duty and weeks of waiting for a UK collector. Oxid-X is formulated, manufactured and shipped from Britain, and produced in Birkenhead, England.

Does Oxid-X work on red ebonite?

Yes. Red ebonite oxidises the same way as black hard rubber, and Stage 1 lifts it just as effectively.

What are the two stages?

Stage 1 is the deoxidiser, a bespoke solution formulated specifically for black hard rubber and ebonite that lifts decades of surface oxidation from the material. Stage 2 is the Velvet Wax, a carbon-black pigmented wax that feeds the rubber, restores deep uniform colouration and provides UV inhibition.

What is re-blackening?

Re-blackening is the collector's term for returning discoloured black hard rubber to its original deep black. Approaches divide into greases that sit on the surface, dyes and paints that add colour to it, and deoxidisers that remove the oxidation itself. Oxid-X is a two-stage system in the deoxidiser family: Stage 1 lifts the oxidation, Stage 2 protects the recovered surface with an archival wax. The original engraving and imprint are not painted over or filled; they return to legibility because the material obscuring them is gone.

What does the finish feel like?

No. The result is a firm, warm finish with natural tactile grip, the feel of factory-fresh vintage material. It is not greasy and not oily.

Is the deep black a coating?

No. The deep black is the original material recovered, not a coating. Stage 1 lifts the oxidation and Stage 2 restores deep uniform colouration to the rubber itself.

Who has tested Oxid-X?
