Silicone oils. Mineral conditioners. Generic rubber restorers and solvents. The vintage pen market has made do with products designed for other materials entirely, applied to irreplaceable objects that are a hundred years old.
Collectors have tried nearly everything to re-blacken hard rubber: silicone greases, shoe polishes, black dyes, proprietary paints, even household bleach. These fall into three families. Greases sit on top of the surface and offer only a brief improvement. Paints and dyes add something foreign to a hundred-year-old material, and the better ones are judged by how much of the original engraving still shows through. Surface treatments, the deoxidiser family, take the opposite approach: they remove what has changed rather than adding anything to it.
Oxid-X belongs to that third family, and completes it. Stage 1 lifts the oxidation from the material. Stage 2 then protects the recovered surface with an archival wax, the step conservation practice has long recommended after any surface treatment.
Professional restoration remains the right choice for mechanical work, and the restorers who do it well are the standard this product was built to. What has been missing is a conservation-grade option for the surface itself, in the collector's own hands.
The two established deoxidisers are available only from the United States. For a UK collector that means postage, import duty and weeks of waiting. Oxid-X is formulated, manufactured and shipped from Britain.
Two pens of the same model can sell for very different prices on presentation alone, and the one with the grey bloom and the illegible imprint is routinely the cheaper of the two. Yet oxidation is, in most cases, a surface condition, not damage. The pen underneath is intact.
That cuts both ways. The collector who understands what oxidation is can buy the pen everyone else scrolls past, and restore what the market assumed was lost. And the pens already in the tray, the ones whose imprints have faded and whose black has dulled over the years, are presenting below what they are. One kit treats pen after pen. A bespoke solution formulated specifically for black hard rubber and ebonite. Stage 1 lifts oxidation from the material. The chemistry is specific to the rubber substrate and does not react with metal fittings. Where a pen is being opened for a sac replacement, as most lever fillers are, the section separates at the joint and the parts are treated directly; where it is not, there is no need to strip the pen down to its component parts. Red ebonite oxidises the same way, and Stage 1 lifts it just as effectively.
A carbon-black pigmented wax formulation that feeds the rubber, restores deep uniform colouration, and provides UV inhibition. Oxidation does not stop on its own. Stage 2's protective layer slows the process that has been running since the pen was made. The result is a firm, warm finish with natural tactile grip: the feel of factory-fresh vintage material. Authentically original finish. Not oily. The way it left the factory in 1924.
